Siarter Iaith was created to encourage young people across Wales to learn the Welsh language as often as they can, as well as learning about the Welsh culture, which is something that we think is very important at Nyth Y Deryn, for pupils and staff!  

As part of our Siarter Iaith journey, we introduce a new word or phrase for the week, for staff and students to use and get familiar with. This encourages Welsh speaking patterns throughout the school and helps everyone build their confidence with the language, making it feel like a natural part of life! 

A Seren Yr Wythnos award is given to a learner and staff member every week that recognises individuals good use and understanding of Welsh that week, whether it be a simple ‘Bore da!’ or ‘Sut wyt ti?’, or use of the phrase of the week, every small step in learning Welsh is celebrated.  

One of our highlights of celebrating Welsh is the Eisteddfod, which is something Nyth Y Deryn love to do. Getting all pupils involved in competitions such as art, handwriting, cooking, fact finding and poems! There are many awards to be won, including the overall Bard award. The Eisteddfod is an amazing way for learners to show off their talents and enjoy being part of a Welsh tradition.
